Local Author to Visit Brewer Public Library Book Group

The Brewer Public Library book group is reading two historical novels for their November 9th meeting by local author Ardeana Hamlin, A Dream of Paris and Pink Chimneys. Many people know Ardeana from her articles and her "By Hand" weekly craft column in the Bangor Daily News. She will be joining the group for discussion at their meeting.

Pink Chimneys
is about the famed madam Fanny of Bangor's 19th century brothel.

A Dream of Paris is an historical novel about a girl from Skowhegan whose dream is to become an artist during a time when such ambitions were frowned upon.

October is National Reading Group Month

The Women's National Book Association has designated October as National Reading Group Month.
Check out their website for a list of the nine books chosen as this year's Great Group Reads.
In conjunction with the WNBA, our NOVELIST database has book guides available for the nine books.

To get to NOVELIST, go to the Bangor Public Library website and click on the MARVEL box in the left hand corner of the page. Choose NOVELIST from the list of databases that appears there. The 1st page has a special section on National Reading Group Month.

New Maine Book Groups Reading List

Just want to draw your attention to a new list I just posted of books read over the summer and into fall in Maine book groups. You can find it in the right hand column under "What Maine Libraries Are Reading."

Olive Kitteridge by the 2009 Pulitzer Prize winning author Elizabeth Strout was read by two groups. It is a group of stories linked by one common denominator: Olive Kitteridge, a cantankerous old retired school teacher living in a small town on the coast of Maine.

Man Booker Prize Awarded

The English award for best fiction has just been awarded to Hilary Mantel for her book Wolf Hall. By all accounts this is a very readable historical novel which covers Thomas Cromwell's rise to prominence in the English Tudor Court in the 1500's. Sure to make a good book club selection.
